A certain family member wanted to get their site onto the Google indexes, so I took up the challenge and tried to find out how. The first thing I did was to find out what google knew about the person already. Where any of the sites coming up in the searchs controlled by that person. Lucky for us there were two, a face book account and a Linked In account, using these two sites (which already ranked quite highly in google results – 1st page) we can link to the new site from these existing pages and hence get crawled.
The next stage is to register with google (accounts) and add on the webmaster tools, from here we can upload a site map to google. This apparently helps google crawl your site – quicker. You can either write your own sitemap by hand or, you can go here http://www.xml-sitemaps.com and have it generate one for you.
Once this is all done, just sit back and wait!
It took one week for google to find the new site this way.
